Culinary- (Semester) Course Code; 88092000 Teacher: Mr. Preston Focus Code: Fund of Cul Careers Cook, eat, repeat! The purpose of this class is to help you improve your food preparation and cooking skills, as well as, learn about food safety and sanitation. Cooking is an important life skill that can be developed with practice. No one is conceived an awesome cook, one learns by doing. The goal of this class is to give you the opportunity to prepare a variety of foods so that you will improve your cooking skills. So, come explore the foodie in you!

The course content provides exposure to a variety of movement opportunities and experiences which includes, but is not limited to Fitness Activities and Team Sports. The integration of fitness concepts throughout the content is critical to student success in this course and in the development of a healthy and physically active lifestyle.

Activities enable students to increase self-awareness and develop the skills needed to successfully plan for postsecondary education and the workplace. Career assessment should include interests, aptitudes, and basic skills. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include job shadowing, field trips, and mentors. Work-based activities allow students to evaluate their career choices as they relate to actual careers at the worksite

8th grade students earn high school credit for this course. HOPE develops student understanding of physical activity, fitness, nutrition, wellness planning,

prevention, human sexuality including abstinence, HIV, cognitive abilities, lifetime fitness, movement and responsible behaviors.

Introduction to Art History - (Semester) Course Code: 01000605 Teacher- Ms. Rayannic Focus Code: M/J INTRO ART HIST Students take an inquiry-based approach to exploring, researching, and analyzing works of art across time and cultures. Students learn to identify the functions, forms, media, styles of art, cultural ideas, and themes related to a variety of time periods and geographical places. The course lays a foundation for the art criticism process and explores career options related to art history and criticism. This course incorporates hands-on activities and utilization of art materials

Musical Theater

Acting 1 - (Semester) Course Code: 04000405 Teacher- Mrs. Leonard Focus Code: M/J Acting 1 Through simple scripted scenes, performance projects, and/or practical application, students learn to identify what makes performances believable and explore the tools used to create, articulate, and execute them. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside of the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.

Dance 1 - (Full Year) Course Code: 03000000 Teacher: Mrs. Leonard Focus Code: M/J Dance 1 The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop fundamental knowledge and skills in two or more dance styles, recognize choreographic processes, enhance aesthetic awareness, and make connections between dance and other subject areas. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside of the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom. Students in this class may need to obtain appropriate footwear and/or dance attire and/or a uniform shirt. *Please note that this course satisfies one semester of the required physical education needed towards middle grades promotion.

Theatre 1 - (Full Year) Course Code- 04000000 Teacher- Mrs. Leonard Focus Code: M/J Theater 1 Students learn the basics of building a character through such activities as pantomime, improvisation, and effective speaking using articulation, projection, and breathing. Students also learn the importance of technical theatre and explore the use of such elements as costumes, props, and scenery. Students practice writing for the theatre and explore various theatre roles and functions.

Advanced Theatre 2 - (Full Year) Course Code- 04000100 Teacher- Mrs. Leonard Focus Code: M/J Theater 2 Students with theatre experience and instruction continue to study acting, design, and dramatic literature to increase the enjoyment and understanding of what is required to prepare plays for the public. Students explore theatre history, study the great American playwrights, examine the cultural and historical contributions to theatre, and begin to use the information to inform and improve their theatre knowledge and skills. Students begin to use the basic elements of theatre design through practical application and projects. Public performances may serve as a the culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend and assess learning in the classroom.

Student’s coursework focuses on basic acting, vocal performance,
dance/movement, non-dance movement, and staging. Students survey current

Beginning Band – (Full Year) Course Code- 13023000 Teacher: Mr. Devitt Focus Code: M/J Band 1

The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop basic technical skills on wind or percussion instruments through the refinement and performance of high school band literature. Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills in interpretation of notation and expressive markings, individual and ensemble performance, and critical listening. 

Chorus - (Full Year) Course Code: 13030000 Teacher: Mrs. Leonard Focus Codes: M/J Chorus 1, M/J Chorus 2 The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop fundamental vocal musicianship, technical skills, and aesthetic awareness through the study and performance of varied middle/junior high choral literature.

Concert Band- (Full Year) Course Code: 13023100 Teacher: Mr. Devitt Focus Code: M/J BAND 2 This class is for second-year musicians. Students will continue to explore second-year fundamental skills including the intermediate level note and rhythm reading, articulations, stylistic markings including dynamics, and extended techniques. More emphasis is placed on group application of learned skills to music literature. This group will have a performance each semester as well as an off-campus festival performance in the spring.

Jazz Band - (Full Year) Course Code: 13023300 Teacher: Mr. Devitt Focus Code: M/J Band 4 This course is designed for students who demonstrate proficiency in woodwind, brass and/or percussion techniques, music literacy, critical listening/aural skills, and ensemble performance skills, promotes greater engagement with and appreciation for music through performance and other experiences with a broad spectrum of music, as well as creativity through composition and/or arranging. The study includes the cultivation of well-developed instrumental ensemble techniques and skills, music literacy and theory, and deeper aesthetic engagement with a wide variety of high-quality repertoire.

Symphonic Band- (Full Year) Course Code: 13023200 Teacher: Mr. Devitt Focus Code: M/J BAND 3 This course is designed for students ready to build on skills and knowledge previously acquired in a middle or high school instrumental ensemble, promotes the enjoyment and appreciation of music through the performance of high-quality, intermediate-level wind and percussion literature. Rehearsals focus on the development of critical listening/aural skills, individual musicianship, instrumental technique, refinement of ensemble skills, and aesthetic engagement culminating in periodic public performances.

Spanish

The purpose of this course is to enable students to continue to acquire proficiency in Spanish through a linguistic, communicative, and cultural approach to language learning. Emphasis is placed on the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and on the acquisition of the fundamentals of applied grammar. Cross-cultural understanding is fostered, and real-life applications are emphasized throughout the course. Course content requirements for the two-course sequence M/J Spanish, Beginning and Intermediate are equivalent to Spanish 1

The content includes but is not limited to instruction in introductory keyboarding, introductory word processing, introductory electronic presentation, introductory computer hardware, introductory Internet, and soft skills for business applications.

Yearbook - (Full Year) Course Code: 10060000 Teacher: Mr. Lau Focus Code: M/J Journalism 1 Do you enjoy taking pictures? Do you want to be involved in the events that take place during and after school? Then yearbook class is for you! As part of this class, you are responsible for planning, creating, photographing, and editing the school’s yearbook. You will design the cover, create the pages, and take pictures. Students run the show here. You will learn basic page layout skills as well as basic photography and editing skills. We also help to promote different events that are happening throughout the school year and create banners/flyers for these events. 

TV Production- (Full Year) Course Code: 10060100 Teacher: Ms. Grain Focus Code: M/J JOURN 2

The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop skills in the production of journalism across print, multimedia, web, and broadcast/radio platforms and to become aware of journalism history, careers, ethics use, and management techniques related to the production of journalistic media. Some activities may be required outside of the school day.
