Student Dress Code/Uniform

The purpose of the Dress Code is to encourage students to focus on the learning process without the distractions of unsuitable dress and grooming, as well as developing good habits that will lead to “dressing for success” in college and career. Students shall maintain a clean, orderly appearance at all times. The responsibility for the personal appearance of the student rests with the parent/guardian and the student. Personal appearance shall not disrupt the educational process. A student who is dressed appropriately is demonstrating a respect for self and others, as well as contributing to a safe and orderly learning environment. The following establishes the minimum acceptable standards for student dress to be interpreted and enforced by the principal or designee. Each principal has the authority with his or her staff and community, as permitted by School Board policy, to establish additional standards at individual schools.

  • Apparel shall be adequate in both length and coverage to be considered appropriate for school.
  • Pants shall be worn fastened and at the waist with no undergarments showing. Leggings are not acceptable pants and may not be worn to school. Bottoms must be worn at the waist, above the hip/pelvic bone. Bottoms must fit properly (No tight pants or overly baggy pants). Length of skirts and shorts must be at or below the knee in the standing position. Jeans are permitted; however, they may NOT be torn or tattered. The following items may not be worn: Clothing that drags on the ground (ex.pant legs) is not permitted. Torn or tattered clothing is not permitted.  Lycra, Spandex, Joggers, sweatpants or stretch fabrics are not permitted. White pants, shorts or skirts are not permitted. Pants with holes, tears, etc. may not be worn, if in the principal’s judgment, they may cause a disruption to the school environment. 
  • Shirts or blouses shall be appropriately fastened in accord with the design of that shirt or blouse. The length shall extend beyond the waist level.
  • Clothing that exposes underwear or body parts in an indecent or vulgar manner is prohibited.
  • Transparent or see-through tops, bare midriff, strapless, low-cut clothing, or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage or are of a suggestive nature are prohibited; halters, backless dresses or tops, tube tops, tank tops, muscle shirts, or any clothing which may be distracting are prohibited.
  • Any articles of clothing or jewelry that could likely cause injury–such as chains, bracelets, rings, chokers with or without spikes, or studs–are prohibited. Wallet chains of any length are prohibited.
  • Shoes shall be worn at all times. Slippers, slides or flip flops are not permitted. All shoes must have a strap or be designed to remain on during all school related activities.
  • Apparel, emblems, insignia's, badges, or symbols that promote the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or any other illegal activity are prohibited.
  • Apparel or symbols which may be gang-related may not be displayed on a student’s person or in the student’s possession.
  • No writing, tattoos, or body stickers on face, arms, hands, or legs are permitted at Challenger Middle School. Gang-related tattoos, or other tattoos that may cause a substantial disruption to the educational environment as determined by the principal, are prohibited.
  • Adornments that, in the principal’s judgment could cause injury, be a safety risk or cause a disruption to the school environment may not be worn. Examples of prohibited adornments include, but are not limited to, hoops or rings attached to the nose, eyebrow, cheeks or lips. Adornments which are attached (pierced) to exposed body parts other than ears are prohibited. TONGUE and/or NOSE piercings are NOT permitted.
  • The wearing on campus of hats, caps, headgear (including hoodies) or sunglasses except in conjunction with designated school-approved uniforms or at authorized athletic practices or activities is prohibited. There may be certain exceptions for medical conditions, religious observation, and physical education classes held outside. The principal will determine these exceptions.
  • Any method of public display (including clothing, nail polish, and other items that may be worn or carried) of an organization affiliated with controversial, obscene, or illegal activities on a person, may not be worn, if in the principal’s judgement, they may cause a substantial disruption to the school environment.
  • Only natural hair color is permitted at Challenger Middle School. Hair coloring or style that may cause a substantial disruption to the educational environment, as determined by the principal, is prohibited. 
  • Long, over-sized jerseys are prohibited. Wearing hoodies which conceal the identity of the student are prohibited.
  • Face Coverings (masks): Cloth or surgical face coverings/masks will be required in the Face to Face model of instruction, except while seated eating breakfast or lunch. Masks shall adhere to the Student Code of Conduct for all apparel. Ski masks, full face/head coverings, buffs/gaiters, lace or mesh masks, are not permissible. Masks must follow CDC guidelines. Masks must follow the same style requirements as shirts.
    • Face coverings/masks will be required in the Face-to-Face model of instruction except when eating breakfast and lunch.
    • Masks shall adhere to the Student Code of Conduct, which states: “Apparel, emblems, insignia's, badges or symbols that promote the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco or any other illegal activity are prohibited.”
    • As feasible, cloth face coverings can be an important mitigation tool for individuals and families when not able to maintain social distancing.
    • The CDC provides comprehensive recommendations for the use of cloth face coverings to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
    • Educational programs should be mindful that young children may initially fear individuals wearing a face covering, and therefore should consider ways to gently introduce the idea.
    • Cloth face coverings are meant to protect other people in case the wearer is unknowingly infected but does not have symptoms.
    • The wearing of a Face Shield is allowed but must be accompanied by a mask, including District provided. An ADA accommodation should be submitted and approved if an individual wants to wear an alternate shield such as one that goes below the chin and curves around the cheek area.

THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION SHALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO APPRAISE ANY CURRENT FASHION OR FAD AND DETERMINE WHETHER IT IS APPROPRIATE FOR SCHOOL.
